International public sculpture competition for Parque de Levante in Murcia, Spain

 The Gabarron Foundation, together with Fundación Murcia Futuro (FMF), and K/R Architects from New York, is pleased to announce an international sculpture competition taking place in the Spanish city of Murcia on the grounds of the future Parque de Levante—the first major sculpture park to open in Spain in the twenty-first century. All international artists and designers are encouraged to participate in this unique opportunity to showcase their work. Award prizes range from 3,000 to 24,000 euros.

The 100-acre (40 hectare) Parque de Levante, designed by architects John Keenen and Terence Riley from K/R Architects, is conceived to be the largest outdoor sculpture park in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. The Park is designed to incorporate sculpture and environmental artworks of varying scales and mediums into a wholly sustainable landscape. In addition, a new museum related to art and the environment is planned for the western edge of the park, conveniently located 1 kilometer from the historic center of Murcia.

The theme of the competition will be of the artist’s own choosing, but those works that have a relationship to the Parque de Levante’s mission of “Hortus Cultura” – the artistic landscape - will be taken into special consideration by the jury.

The international jury will consist of seven or more members, chosen from the fields of Fine Arts, Architecture, and Design. The five winning proposals will be produced in Murcia; all materials will be paid for and projects carried out by FMF. The sculptures will be displayed on designated sites within Parque de Levante.

Of all submitted proposals, the fifty best will be chosen as honorable mentions, in which case each artist will receive an accredited honorary certificate. Their works will be included in exhibitions in Spain and the United States and published in an exhibition catalog. They will become part of the art collection of Fundación Murcia Futuro.

The Gabarron Foundation was established in Spain in 1992, inspired by the ideals of its founder, the Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón: to educate and teach while at the same time defend, support, and disseminate Culture in its most varied forms. The Foundation’s growth over the past 20 years has been guided by its mission to “create awareness through the arts.” The Gabarron Foundation organizes and presents annual programs through its centers and museums in Spain and the United States. The Carriage House Center for the Arts is The Gabarron Foundation’s New York headquarters. Since 2001, the Carriage House has advanced as a platform for the cross-fertilization of Hispanic and Latin American cultures in the United States.
