The 2014 Studio Program will be housed on the lower level of Smack Mellon’s building at 92 Plymouth Street.  The residency will take place from May 15, 2014 -April 15, 2015.
Smack Mellon offers free studio space to eligible artists for an eleven-month period. The program provides 6 artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space and a $5000 fellowship (dependent upon funding). The program does not provide living space. Artists also have access to shared facilities that include: a state-of-the-art digital production lab, including a set of 27" iMac workstations professionally configured for video and graphics editing, calibrated video monitors, a 3D-capable HD projector, surround-sound monitor speakers, flatbed scanners, a wide-format photo printer, a color laser printer and wireless internet access; and a shared kitchen/lounge area. Our staff is on-hand to provide technical support and to respond to the studio needs of our resident artists.
Our fabrication shop equipment was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. We will replace the equipment as soon as funding is available. Meanwhile our Studio Artists can use the shop space, the hand tools we have and their own tools to build larger projects that their studios can't accommodate.
Studios range in size from 250 to 300 square feet. Not all studios have windows. Artists will not be permitted to choose their studio.
Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it.
**Please also note that due to the possibility of flooding in our basement studios, we strongly recommend that artists keep anything valuable off the floor at all times; therefore artists accustomed to working on the floor should think carefully about whether our studios will meet their needs.
Eligibility
All applicants must be United States citizens or legal Permanent Residents of the United States, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree program, and must be able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the 2014 Smack Mellon residency.
Selection Process
A panel of arts professionals and artists will review applications and select artists for the 2014 season. Artists will be selected based on the quality of their work and their potential for making the most of their time in the program. All applicants will be notified by email. Please do not call the office for selection results.

** This is an entirely online application process. All content must be uploaded through the Smack Mellon website, as a single .zip folder.

** You will not receive a confirmation email from Smack Mellon--just a page saying your upload was successful. If your files upload successfully, please do not contact the Smack Mellon office to confirm receipt of application. 

** If your files are not uploading correctly, we recommend making sure you are using an up-to-date browser and that your internet connection is working correctly. You can also attempt to upload with a different browser or from a different computer/internet connection. Also note you may need to allow extra time for large video files to upload, depending on your internet speed.  Please take these troubleshooting steps before calling the Smack Mellon office for assistance. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY TO UPLOAD YOUR MATERIALS.

** Mis-labeled .zip folders, jpgs or other files may result in your disqualification, so please read the labeling instructions carefully! Please test all files before uploading to make sure they open correctly.

** If you upload a .zip file with the same exact name twice through our system, it will not replace your original file.  Please double check your file before uploading!
