Sharjah Art Foundation 2014 – Production Programme: open call for MENASA region artist grants

Sharjah Art Foundation announces the 2014 Production Programme Open Call for grants to artists working in a range of media. Up to $200,000 is available in this application cycle.

The Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) Production Programme broadens the possibilities for the production of art in the MENASA region through a commitment to support innovation and excellence in artistic practice by encouraging risk and experimentation. This commitment places artists at the core of the Foundation’s mission by offering grants and professional support for the realisation of projects selected from an open call for proposals.

The past decade has seen an extraordinary rise in artistic activity throughout the Middle East, resulting in an increased visibility for artists both regionally and internationally. Within this context, the Foundation hopes to promote and encourage an environment of public and private patronage for the highest level of artistic endeavour. This programme focuses on supporting artists in their individual attempts to create work on a scale they have perhaps never imagined possible.

Arts practitioners are invited to propose imaginative, ambitious and inspirational projects that will transform our understanding of what art is and how it can be experienced. With this initiative we hope to engage and challenge the artists, our audiences and ourselves aesthetically, intellectually, emotionally, socially, politically or in ways new and unexpected.

In 2014 we are offering production grants to artists working in a range of media including sculpture, installation, time-based media, artist’s books and performance. Up to a total of $200,000 is available in this application cycle. The success of a proposal will be determined by merit rather than budget. To this end, projects with budgets that range from modest to ambitious scales will be considered. The submission deadline is 31 January 2014 and selections will be announced in March. The selected projects will be developed and produced by the artist and the Sharjah Art Foundation, with presentation of the completed project as agreed between the artist(s) and SAF.
The Production Programme was launched in 2008. Over 500 submissions have been received, 230 applications considered and 31 projects selected for production.
This document should give you all the information you need to know to apply for the 2014 Production Programme. Please read it carefully before you complete the attached application form. If you have any further questions, please direct them to productionprogramme@sharjahart.org.

We invite you to submit a proposal for Yarat's international artist residency program, located in Baku, Azerbaijan. The residency would be for 2 weeks during 2014 and we ask participants to create a series of workshops, lectures or participatory activities for artists as part of their residency.

About Yarat

YARAT is a not-for-profit contemporary art organisation based in Azerbaijan. They curate exhibitions throughout the year, organise education events and support a group of artists through a gallery and participation in biennials around the world. YARAT are dedicated to nurturing an understanding of contemporary art in Azerbaijan and to creating a platform for Azerbaijani artists, both nationally and internationally. www.yarat.az/

There is a nascent contemporary art scene in Baku, with artists drawing from a rich cultural history as well as a growing contemporary art 'infrastructure' in Central Asia. YARAT's mission to educate means they are keen to draw on an ever wider audience of artistic input, and are actively seeking applicants for an on-going master class and workshop programme in Baku. We have so far arranged residencies for Jordan Baseman, RCA Head of Sculpture, Mark Dunhill, Dean of Art Central St Martins (Sculpture), Paul Coldwell, Professor of Fine Art (Printmaking), all of whom are heading out to Baku over the Autumn.

Ideally you will be an established fine art professional, with several years' experience teaching both small and large groups of young artists, and a significant career as an artist. Russian language is not a pre-requisite but is very helpful.

Expenses covered include: flights, accommodation, materials, per diem.
Further details are available on request.

To apply, please send a CV and initial cover letter (max 2 pages) to florence@pelhamcommunications.com

Please ensure your letter states clearly:
- the week(s) you would like to come (we don't recommend mid-summer, but otherwise any time in 2014)
- the reason you are interested in this residency and in delivering a masterclass in Azerbaijan
- outlined proposal(s) of the workshop(s), lectures or participatory events
- outlined proposal(s) of the art you would like to make while in Azerbaijan, or if this is not possible, the aspects of our country that inspire you to make work.

http://www.lecouventauzits.com/le-couvent/47-open-call-2014.html

SPACE and LUX are delighted to announce a new collaborative residency programme based at LUX and the new SPACE-run cultural venue, The White Building, London’s centre for art, technology and sustainability.

Proposals are invited from artists to undertake a research-based residency within the LUX collection, Europe's largest collection of artists' film and video, leading to the creation of new work and the production of a series of events during the residency period at The White Building.

Founded in 1966, the LUX Collection represents over 6000 works by more than 1500 artists dating from the early twentieth century to the present day. Originally established with a policy of open access submission, the changing nature of the organisation and its acquisition policies over the decades have created a eclectic combination of well-known and near unseen works, spanning experimental film, performance, essay film through to contemporary digital video. This residency invites artists to consider the context of the collection in relationship to their own practice, with the potential to explore not only the works within it but the economic structures, material histories, relationships and even ellipses that surround it. As part of their research the artist will be encouraged and supported to stage a series of events (such as screenings, talks and performances) that reflect on their project during the course of the residency.

Residency Period

On Offer
£1200 Honorarium

Call for proposals The Photographer's gallery London

Call for proposals

Animate Projects and The Photographers’ Gallery are inviting proposals for an artist to make work for The Wall at the Photographers’ Gallery and online at Animate Projects.

Background

Happenstance brings together the UK’s leading organisations for two popular, related visual artforms – photography and animation. The historical relationship between photography and animation (Eadweard Muybridge) and the tensions between still and moving are now encoded into DSLR cameras (capable of higher frame rates than traditional DV cameras). In everyday life, screen technologies have already altered the ways in which the visual image is made present and play a significant role in mediating public life. These are some of the considerations that we hope to explore in contextualising the project and exploring ideas of digital production and spectatorship.
The Photographers’ Gallery was the first independent gallery in the UK devoted to photography and has been instrumental in establishing photography’s important role in culture and society. It is the UK’s primary venue for photography with a mission to support a varied and distinctive engagement with the artform.
Animate Projects champions experimental animation, supporting artists to experiment and take risks, and working across the contemporary visual arts, animation, film and design, and where those practices intersect. Animate Projects has pioneered the exhibition of artists’ moving image through online and digital platforms. animateprojects.org is a unique resource, presenting experimental animation and a wealth of related material, in a curated context.
Happenstance builds on the synergies between the two artforms and both organisations’ curiosities about how people interact with public screens and digital images. The Wall is a 2.7 x 3m video wall in the foyer of The Photographers’ Gallery, visible to everyone visiting the building and passing by. For the Gallery, The Wall forms part of a collaborative research programme exploring issues concerning the digital image, its dissemination and display on-screen.
A particular aspect of The Wall is its specific context within a photography gallery and we want the project to further critical debate around medium specificity, digital culture, and the relationship of photography to 'animation' in ‘on-screen’ contemporary visual culture.

Brief

The commission is open to UK based artists working in photography and moving image. Our priority is to commission work that responds to the public and online contexts in which the work will be situated, and which explore photographic and animated moving image practice in inventive and interesting ways.
Please see below for technical information about The Wall. We will provide advice, support and assistance to the commissioned artist.
We are open to discussion as to what the online presentation of the project will comprise, eg a single channel version of the work, or a series of tests or other material. Online, the project will be presented on its own page (for example, here).
For exhibition at The Photographer’s Gallery the work will be silent, but the online version can be silent or with sound.
We are offering £5,000, to include all production, clearances and delivery costs and an artist’s fee. We will require commissioned artists to provide production materials (eg sketches, tests) and to undertake an interview for online, a digital image for a limited edition print, and to take part in a panel discussion.
We will contract the selected artist by the end of October 2013, and the completed work must be delivered by 17 December 2013. The work will be exhibited at The Photographers’ Gallery from 17 January 2014 for approximately 10 weeks.

Submission

To submit a proposal, please send us the following (as Word docs or PDFs):
  1. a one page CV
  2. a short statement about your practice and a brief outline of your interest in, and approach to, the commission (not more than one side A4)
  3. a proposal (not more than one side A4)
  4. any additional visual material
  5. any links to previous work or information about your work
In your proposal, please tell us your idea, and give us a clear indication of work you’re proposing to make, including visual style and technique, and provide any key production information eg collaborators, other assistance, etc.
The deadline for submissions is 10.00 on Fri 11 October 2013.
Email your submission to happenstancecommission@gmail.com
Please note that we may invite shortlisted artists to discuss their project on 21 October (in person or by Skype).
The selection will be made by Katrina Sluis (Curator, Digital Programme, The Photographers' Gallery) and Gary Thomas (Director, Animate Projects).
We will inform people of our decision by 25 October 2013. Please note that we are unable to offer feedback on unsuccessful proposals. If you have any questions please email gary@animateprojects.org
