The Art Department invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Art History with a specialty in African art and the ability to teach both undergraduate and master’s level graduate historical and contemporary subjects. Emmanuel College Artist Residency Program

The Emmanuel College Art Department offers an eight-week artists residency to four artists each summer. The residency supports a diverse group of artists, providing time and space for established and emerging artists to develop their work.
The Art Department specifically aims to award a residency to one individual from each of the four categories: ceramics, photography, printmaking and social justice. Fostering creative and artistic excellence, the residency also plays an important role in advancing the visual arts on the Emmanuel campus, providing an important educational program on contemporary art accessible to students, staff and faculty.



The residency defines Emmanuel College as a leader in the visual arts and brings greater visibility to that leadership role beyond the confines of the College.

Young European Artist Trieste Contemporanea Award 2013

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2013 Young European Artist Award Trieste Contemporanea.
Closing date: Tuesday 26 November 2013.
Since 1999, the Trieste Contemporanea Committee assigns the Young European Artist Award Trieste Contemporanea every year to a young Central Eastern European artist with the aim of promoting his or her work on the international art scene. This is the first year that an open call for submission is called out. 
The award is open to any young artist aged under 30 and working in any media and born in one of the following countries: Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and Ukraine.
 
The award gives the winner the possibility of conceiving and displaying an exhibition project in Trieste at the Studio Tommaseo, and of having a monographic catalogue published. In special cases an alternative scholarship of 2000,00 euros, to be used to perfect  the winner’s artistic research, can be attributed as the prize instead of the standard one (exhibition-plus-catalogue).
All eligible applications will be examined by a judging committee comprising experts and curators of contemporary art from Europe, who are members of the Continental Breakfast network.
Submissions have to include the following:
  • a completed application form;
  • an artistic statement (in English – maximum 1,500 characters);
  • at least 5 images of recent works (*), with title of work, year of work, medium, dimensions, and a brief English description/statement – JPEG or PDF, 72dpi, no larger than 500kb each);
  • a brief CV (in English – not more than 1 page).
These three latter documents should be presented as a PDF portfolio (file size up to 5Mb).

Gyeonggi Creation Center is an artist residency located in the west coast of Korea. Established in 2009, GCC aims to support artists from around the world and from various fields of art for their creative work and research. International call for a ceramic artist for a 4-week residency at the Artists House Stadttöpferei in the historic city of  Neumünster in Northern Germany. Residency programme mainly supports emerging artists who use clay as their primary material.
For 25 years now, the artist house “Stadttöpferei”,  has been based in the historical city centre of Neumünster, northern Germany. It is run by the Dr. Hans Hoch Foundation as a special place for art and artists, focused on ceramic art in all its facets. The institution is evolving constantly and is characterized by numerous ceramic artists who have lived and worked here. Activities include regular exhibitions and workshops in the gallery or the International Ceramic Symposium, which took place here in 2010 for the first time. In future it will be possible to enabling more artists to live and work in the residence house, due to the new internationally announced program “Ceramic Artist in Residence”. This program opens dialogue on contemporary positions of ceramic art, intercultural exchange, as well as experiments with materials and audience.
Conditions
This residency is designed to accomodate emerging artists for 4 weeks free of charge and includes a well equipped ceramics studio, as well as a comfortable living space. The resident will be provided with basic materials and electric and gas kilns firings during the course of the residency. The studio space is open to the public during the day, artists are requested to be present and avaliable for visitors giving them an insight into their creative process. At the end of the residency, a final public presentation in the form of a lecture, workshop, exhibition or performance focussing on the work produced at Stadttöpferei is expected.

Applications for the four-week stay in 2013 will be accepted until 31st January 2013. The residence program mainly supports emerging artists, who use clay as their primary material. This residency is only avaliable once for each artist.

HICP curatorial residencies in Helsinki

Frame Visual Art Finland launches its residency programme starting 2014. At the moment the programme consists of curatorial residencies.

The residency programme kicks off with the HICP curatorial residencies in Helsinki co-organised by Frame and HIAP Helsinki International Artist Programme. The participants for the residencies will be selected through open calls.
The aim of the residency programme is to offer space for in-depth research and focused production time, immersion in new cultural contexts, critical support of international residency communities. This will allow for long-term peer-networks, a range of future collaborations, and strengthen the development of individual practices as well as the discursive connections between Finnish and international contemporary art fields.

HICP Helsinki International Curatorial Programme


HICP Helsinki International Curatorial Programme offers curatorial residencies in Helsinki for international curators of contemporary art. It is co-organised by HIAP Helsinki International Artist Programme and Frame Visual Art Finland.
The aim of the programme is to provide curators with an opportunity to carry out research and to develop international curatorial projects while building contacts with art practitioners and cultural organisations in Finland.
Curatorial residencies include the cost of travel to and from Helsinki with a grant for living expenses, studio accommodation, residency services and administrative support. HIAP and Frame both offer practical assistance, networks and critical context for the residents’ curatorial research and projects. A public event such as lecture, workshop or screening is organised during each residency. The curators have also access to the international residency community and programme of events at HIAP, while Frame provides extensive contacts to Finnish artists and other arts professionals.
The length of the curatorial residency is usually one calendar month.

Omi International Artists Residency in New York

Omi International Artists Residency invites visual artists from every continent, representing a wide diversity of artistic styles, to gather in rural New York State to experiment, collaborate and share ideas. During four weeks each June-July, concentrated time for creative work is balanced with the stimulation of cultural exchange and critical appraisal.

Artists are provided with a private studio, shared living quarters, and meals at no cost, but are responsible for their travel and material expenses. The first week of the residency, artists have the opportunity to work with a master printmaker to produce an edition of monotypes. Tamarind Institute master printmakers, Melissa and Ted Braggins, are owners and printers at Pondside Press, located in nearby Rhinebeck. high quality material is provided: each participating artist is required to donate one print to the printer and one to the Art Omi Collection.
Each session, a distinguished critic/curator is invited to participate as Critic-in-Residence, who leads discussions and makes individual studio visits.

Our Visitors Program enables residents to have conversations with many visiting art critics, gallery owners and prominent artists. Direct engagement with the New York City art world is unmatched by similar residency programs.
The program culminates with Open Studio Day, during which hundreds of professionals, art lovers, neighbors and friends view work, ask questions and engage with the artists.

Journalism Fellowships at the Reuters Institute, University of Oxford

Applications are invited for the 2014/15 Journalism Fellowship Programme at the Reuters Institute, Oxford University.

The program gives visiting journalists from around the world an opportunity to critically reflect upon their profession, to research a subject of their choice under the supervision of an academic specializing in that area, and to enjoy the breadth of academic, cultural and social life at the University of Oxford.

Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in journalism and good spoken and written English. This is not a degree program but fellows are expected to write a substantial piece of research of publishable quality.
The fellowships, which commence from October 2014, include the Thomson Reuters Foundation Fellowships, Gerda Henkel Fellowship in the field of Humanities, Said-Asfari Fellowship for journalists from the Levant and the Wincott Fellowships for Eastern European business / economic journalists.

African Short-film competition seeks entries

African filmmakers ages 18 and older can submit stories for a chance to win US$25,000.



The Afrinolly Shortfilm Competition is accepting video storytelling on African issues with a focus on creativity and narrative. The competition aims to motivate and reward skilled emerging filmmakers.

Categories include short movie and documentary. First, second and third place in each category will receive US$25,000, $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.

Running time for each video must be no longer than 15 minutes, including any titles and/or credits. The competition is accepting only films distributed to the public after Jan. 1, 2013. Entries may be submitted in one of the following languages: Afrikaans, English, French, Swahili and Yoruba.

This edition of the competition is conducted in partnership with MTN Nigeria, the iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival and Goethe Institut.

Artists' Residencies in the Community at Highgreen in rural Northumberland

VARC’ is inviting visual artists to apply for twelve-month residencies at Highgreen in rural Northumberland.  The Trust is hoping to appoint two artists from applications submitted; one artist to hold the resdiency staritng 2014 and another artist to hold the residency starting October 2015.
Aims
VARC's primary aims are to:
• Promote interest, awareness and understanding of visual arts in a rural community through engagement with an artist
• Develop visual arts projects in rural communities
• Offer a unique opportunity to an artist wishing to develop his or her practice by working and living in a remote rural community
The Residency
VARC is looking for:

artists who feel that 12 months spent living in an isolated rural location will significantly benefit their practice.  Although the Trust feels that artists who might most benefit are those who have lived in an urban or city environment, artists will be considered regardless of their current location as long as they can explain how this would benefit their practice.  The length of the residency is one year, as this would allow the artist to experience the full cycle of seasons as well as the time for the rural community and environment to have an impact on the work.  However in exceptional circumstances six month residencies are not ruled out.  The aim is to give the artist a unique opportunity to concetrate on his/her practice in a remote setting, away from the constraints of city life.  It is hoped that this experience will have a lasting effect on the artist.
artists who want to be part of a community and who enjoy contact with people.  The resident artist is expected to spend at least 15 days during the year delivering projects.  Planning and preparation time would be extra to these days.  What form this work would take would depend on the artist the nature of his or her work but could include projects with specific groups, open studio days, practical sessions, talks and participation as Artist in Residence in local events.  The Trust hopes that the experience of having a prctising artist living and working in this rural community will offer people an insight into how professional artists work as well as adding an enriching creative element.

Information 
In addition to work in the community the artist  produces a body of work for an end of year exhibition to be held at Highgreen. The artist is contracted to spend a minimum of 22.5 hours per week on work for the exhibition and the community aspects of the residency, but VARC would expect that to fully utilise the opportunity and integrate with the local community, the artist would wish to devote their time fully to the residency. There is a part-time member of staff to support the artist, liaise between the artist and the Trust, arrange community projects in consultation with the artist, promote the artist’s work and the residency, produce the catalogue, help organise the exhibition and facilitate other avenues the artist may wish to pursue. The artist is contracted to provide documentation about the experience of the residency in an agreed format.
Accommodation
The residency is based in converted stable buildings, part of the estate of Highgreen in the North Tyne. Highgreen is remote with stunning views across the moors. There is an immediate community of about 20 people. The hamlet of Greenhaugh with an inn is about three miles away and a mile beyond this at Lanehead there is a village hall. The local shops are in Bellingham, some 10 miles away and Newcastle is 40 miles away. The artist will need to have a car.
There is a 498 sq ft studio for the sole use of the artist, as well as fully-furnished one-bedroomed living accommodation. Heat and light for the studio and flat are included and council tax is paid by VARC. Telephone line rental (including broadband internet access) and printer will be provided but the artist should bring his/her own computer and will pay for phone calls.  
Financial package 
• £9,000 per annum artist’s fee and materials
• Materials and expenses for community projects are paid for separately by VARC
• A catalogue will be produced
• Reasonable costs associated with the exhibition (transport, presentation of work) is paid
• Accommodation (flat and studio) worth £6,000 per annum
• The studio is equipped with basic tools and furniture
Criteria on which shortlisting is carried out is as follows:
• Strength of work
• Need/desire for the opportunity
• Experience of, and enthusiasm for, working with people
• Commitment to living at Highgreen
Final selection of artists is also influenced by the desire to create a balance across media and artistic approach from one year to the next.
Applications
Applications are invited from professional visual artists with three or more years of proven work outside full time education. Artists working in two or three dimensions in any medium/material as well as those working in new media, land art, installation work etc are welcome to apply.  An exhibition record and a desire to work in community settings are essential.  The artist should have a strong visual language and a commitment to living and working in a secluded rural environment.

  • OR clips on DVD totalling no more than 10 minutes duration if this format is more appropriate.  Any applicant who submits clips of more than 10 minutes duration in total will not be considered.

  • A written statement describing the artist's work and reasons for applying for the residence with regard to the criteria listed above and a brief outline of community work experience.  This statement should be no more than two pages in total.  Any applicant who submits a statement longer than this will not be considered.
  • Two referees (to be followed up if shortlisted).
  • A SAE for the return of material (if you would like these returned).
  • An indication whether you are applying for the residencey 2014 - 2015 or 2015 - 2016 or both.

BRIC Emerging Curator Program

Each year, BRIC’s Contemporary Art exhibition program dedicates its Project Room at BRIC House to presenting exhibitions developed under the auspices of the Emerging Curator Fellowship. We support the realization and vision of two emerging curators who are chosen through a competitive selection process and named a Emerging Curatorial Fellow. The Program funds thematic group exhibitions of contemporary art focusing on Brooklyn artists.

Applicants must be based in New York City. We will not consider applications from individuals based outside the New York City area, or from students.
The Emerging Curatorial Fellow will recieve an honorarium of $650. Please sumbit only one proposal. We will consider collaborative proposals, but the honorarium will be shared among the curators.
To apply, please submit a proposal, resume, and samples of artists' work. Successful projects generally contain the work of 4 to 6 Brooklyn-based artists. Because of space limitations, please include a maximum of 6 artists. Artwork may be in any visual media. Please view the Project Room layout for information on its physical dimensions.

Kiplinger journalism fellowships

Print, broadcast or online journalists with five or more years of experience can apply for this fellowship.



The Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism offers short-term fellowships to help make better use of new online tools and channels. The fellowship runs April 6-11 at Ohio State University in Columbus.

Fellows will spend a week of training designed to fit journalists’ needs. They will explore creative uses of social media, investigative reporting, public affairs reporting, online data tools and ethical issues that come with social media.
The Kiplinger Foundation covers the costs of the training, lodging, most meals and a travel stipend.

Candidates must send a bio (maximum of 150 words), a short explanation of how the fellowship would benefit them and their newsroom (maximum of 200 words), two references contacts, and Web links to three recent stories. If your work requires that you write in a language other than English, you must provide originals and English translations.

Beam Time: artist's research residency at Central Laser Facility

The Arts Catalyst and Artquest are pleased to announce a new artist research residency at the Central Laser Facility, Oxfordshire. The residency aims is to give an artist the opportunity to develop their practice (and potentially a new body of work) through a period of research and engagement with science specialists. The artist will have access to staff and research at the Central Laser Facility, making at least 10 visits between February to May 2014, and be required to present their work and research in a public facing event in May 2014.



Developed using ideas proposed by Einstein in 1917, laser technology has evolved into a huge variety of fields, with applications reaching almost every aspect of society as well as shining a light on fundamental concepts in chemistry, biology and physics.
The Central Laser Facility produces some of the world’s most powerful light beams, providing scientists with an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technology. These high-powered lasers can be used, for example, to recreate the extreme conditions inside stars and planets by focusing pulses down to a tiny spot where the temperature reaches millions of degrees and the pressure rises to billions of Atmospheres. In contrast advanced, compact, tunable lasers can reveal intricate detail on a microscopic scale enabling scientists to build up a complex picture of the exact molecular interactions that lead to disease, and laser beam 'tweezers' are capable of holding individual micro-droplets that make up clouds helping scientists gain an insight into climate change.  The laser pulses are so short that they can even take snapshots of chemical reactions in action and electricity travelling through material.

Artist Residency Programme at Inside-Out Art Museum China

The Artist Residency Programme at Inside-Out Art Museum (IOAM) is dedicated to be a non-profit public platform to promote and support young emerging artists, as well as to foster greater interactions between China’s and the international art communities. Through the programme, a multifarious art environment will thus be created that gives rise to different international emerging artists to develop meaningful interactions and collaborations with one another. 
 
Located within the Beijing metropolis, the art museum also sits near the borders of hilly regions – an ideal location that offers an undisturbed ambiance for participating artists to devote their time and effort to the making of their art. Through this Residency Programme, we would like to see the involved artists’ careers and development break into new frontiers as a result of the fresh artistic inspirations gained. The Artist Residency Programme accepts applications from international visual artists and curators.

International resident artists who have difficulties in the Chinese language can indicate their need for an assistant, in order to adapt to the life in Beijing quickly. The assistants of the Artist Residency Programme are selected from the museum’s volunteers and would have undergone interview in order to ensure that they meet a certain standard of language ability.

Conflict Photography Award now Open

Freelance photographers reporting in conflict zones can apply for an award.



The Lucas Dolega Award will recognize a photographer who often works in dangerous or difficult circumstances demonstrating dedication to democracy and freedom of information.
 
Participants must submit a selection of 10 to 20 photos documenting a conflict, revolution, natural or sanitary disaster, or their consequences on civil populations. Coverage of any news relevant to the defense of freedoms and democracy will also qualify.
The winner will receive an endowment by Nikon of EUR10,000 (US$13,795) and will have their work displayed at an exhibition in Paris and published in the Reporter Without Borders album. The winner will also be offered the production of another story by Polka Magazine.

New media contest seeks entries

Students, bloggers, artists and writers can submit their innovative storytelling.



The Media School at Bournemouth University is accepting entries for its New Media Writing Prize (NMWP).
NMWP is looking for innovative and interactive storytelling (fiction or non-fiction) written specifically for delivery and reading/viewing on a PC or Mac, the Web or a hand-held device such as an iPad or mobile phone. It could be a short story, novel, documentary or poem using words, images, film or animation with audience interaction.

The overall winner will receive GBP1,000 (US$1,616). The student winner will receive a three-month work placement at the leading e-learning company Unicorn Training, in Dorset, UK, with a weekly pay of GBP250 (US$404). The People's Choice winner, voted for by the public, will be awarded with GBP250.

The deadline is Nov. 25. The deadline for students is Dec. 13.

Future Imagemakers @ NYU Free Photography Workshop

About the program:
This workshop, mentored by Tisch Professors and advanced NYU Photography students, offers free digital photography classes to talented and highly motivated high school imagemakers. Designed to support and enhance their current training, participants will engage in many of the components that comprise the digital image-making curriculum of the BFA program at Tisch Photography and Imaging. Cameras and supplies are provided. Fifteen to twenty young artists will be selected to participate in this free program which is held either on Saturdays or two afternoons during the week from 4-6 from February to May. Applicants, in their freshmen, sophomore, and junior year, from the five boroughs of New York City as well as from Westchester County, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut and Philadelphia are encouraged to apply.

What is a Future Imagemaker?
A Future Imagemaker is someone who makes images, and creates visual content for paper or screen-based media in a variety of context, including art, journalism, documentary, fashion or other. The field of photography and imaging has expanded as our visual world has expanded. If you find yourself drawn to capturing people, scenes, events, and other visual aspects of life through the lens, you may be a Future Imagemaker.

Who should apply for this program?  
Students who are in their freshman, sophomore or junior years of high school who imagine that they will be a Future Imagemaker should apply. Because the program involves travel to Greenwich Village, students of the Saturday program will most likely live in cities and towns within 2 hours of New York, while students of the Monday/Thursday program will most likely live within the 5 boroughs or a 30-minute commuting distance.

What is the schedule for the 2014 program?
The program runs in two different sessions: 12 Saturdays from 10 am until 4 pm OR Mondays and Thursdays from 4-6pm. Our Monday/Thursday program runs weekly from February 6 to May 9. Our Saturday program takes place weekly from February 1 to May 10.

What are the costs of the program? 
Future Imagemakers is tuition-free. Equipment is provided. Students will need to arrange their own transportation to and from class meetings and workshops, as well as any lunch or afternoon snacks.
