Krakow International Video Art Review

The Competition for Young Artists is being held within the framework of the International Video Art Review THE 02. The review consists of 2 main parts, a special show of video works by invited artists and a competition show of video works that have been admitted to the final of the aforementioned competition. In order to take part in the competition, artists should submit a stage I application form, available on the website, by 1 March 2014. At the stage II, 10 chosen artists will be invited to the final presentation. The 10 selected videos by different authors will be presented to the audience of the International Video Art Review THE 02, the program of which includes a premiere screening in Krakow, screenings in other towns in Poland and on TVP Kultura television channel. The appointed jury will award first prize for the best video; however, it is a competition without financial rewards. There is no submission fee.

CUT THE CRAP: RESIDENCY PROGRAM 'Gone West' is a project organized by the province of West-Flanders (Belgium) dedicated to the commemoration of The Great War (1914-1918). Het Entrepot is launching the residential program 'Cut The Crap (C.T.C.)' for artists from around the world working in the field of visual arts. This program will last five years. Every year two artists will be invited to come and work in Het Entrepot. During two months artists will have the chance to research, develop and create an art project. This project will be presented at Het Entrepot and might include an intervention in the public/urban space which will relate to the subject of the residency in response to the environment and to the history of the region. War and conflict is still a reality for many people in today's world, just as it was for those people who lived hundred years ago. 'C.T.C.' is Het Entrepot's artistic component of the commemoration and presents a contemporary reading of the impact of conflict and its causes and consequences which will be revealed through visual arts, multidisciplinary in its nature. Over a period of five years Het Entrepot would like to focus on different themes in relation to the notion of 'conflict'. We kindly invite young artists to research their position towards the greater theme of conflict in the arts and in our globalized world. Het Entrepot is looking for projects that are clearly developed based on a social engagement or which are conceived from the necessity to respond to a particular problem or conflict (in relation to 'History'). The residential program invites the following contemporary disciplines: painting, drawing, sculptures, photography, video, multimedia, mixed media, performance and audio art. PART 1: OUT LOUD OUT LOUD focuses on how the conflict of war gets started, with special attention on censorship and communication. OUT LOUD explores the various ways in which communication methods are being used during times of crisis or conflict. Disinformation and the manipulation of facts and figures are often the starting point of a greater conflict. Through different channels the public is given an enormous amount of information but how much of that information is correct and reliable? Is what we see and hear true? And what about the events that don't reach us and that we never get to see? We challenge artists to research and explore this theme. Artists working within this framework, whether they deal with contemporary global conflicts or research the historical dynamics of the First Great War, are welcome to take part in this program. The residency program will start on September 1th 2014 and will last 8 weeks. A first public exhibition/performance of the project is planned on October 24th 2014. The deadline for applications of this first year of the CTC residency is March 1th 2014. TIME FRAME Year 1: Oct - Dec 2014: OUT LOUD > focuses on how the conflict of war gets started, with special attention on censorship and communication. Year 2: Apr -May 2015: FAINT HERO > focuses on human behavior. The subjects of duty, honor and patriotism are being investigated. Year 3: Aug- Sept 2016: SILENT SPEECH > focuses on stories from different people, soldiers and civilians, involved in conflict. We are pleased to invite independent curators and arts professionals to submit exhibition proposals to be considered for the 2015 Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space exhibition schedule.

Selection Process
Reviewed by the Artists Alliance Inc Curatorial Advisory Committee–comprised of representatives from the local contemporary arts community–proposals will be selected based on conceptual rigor and artistic quality. Consideration will also be given to the individual/group’s ability to meet the artistic mission of Artists Alliance Inc and Cuchifritos Gallery. Successful applicants will articulate a particular need or desire to exhibit within Cuchifritos Gallery and the surrounding community.
When submitting proposals, please carefully review and follow the guidelines outlined below. Applications that do not follow the submission guidelines will not be considered. Please note, you do not have to be a professionally trained curator to submit a proposal as submissions will be judged on merit; however previous exhibition experience will be weighed as an important factor in the selection process. We strongly encourage one, two, and three artist exhibitions, given the smaller scale of the gallery space. Artists who are acting in the curatorial role for the proposed exhibition may not submit a proposal that includes his/her own work.

Proposals must be submitted by the exhibition curator and include the following:
1.   Proposal sentence: one concise sentence summarizing your exhibition
2.   Project Proposal (max 300 words) please include the following:
–         Exhibition description outlining conceptual and thematic goals
–         Artist(s) to be exhibited
–         Checklist of work to be shown
–         Specific interest in Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space
(Please note: Curators who make art may not include their own work in their proposal.)
3.     Background

CALL FOR A CURATORIAL PROJECT

Part of the programme for the 2014-15 season will be entrusted to an independent curator, a critic or a collective whose curatorial project has been chosen by La Box's selection panel.

The final proposal should lay down the project's structure and time frame before the end of June 2014, when timetabling of the exhibitions for the following season will take place. The project's experimental character will be one of the main selection criteria.
As part of the School's teaching context, the programme should include the presence and participation of the students in workshops extending from the designing of the exhibitions through to their actual presentation. The curator(s) should also choose and implement a liaison approach aimed at an outside audience.

The overall budget is 25,000 €. Of this 20,000 € will be devoted to production and transport of works, travel and accommodation expenses for the artists, travel expenses for the curator(s), communication, publications; the remaining 5000 euros will cover miscellaneous expenses for the curator(s).

The guest curator is paid a fee on presentation of an invoice.

La Box will provide accommodation for the curator during the period of residency, either in an artist's studio or one of the other facilities offered by the School.

This accommodation is provided because The Box will require the regular presence of the curator for his/her project and teaching duties, although a part of the work can be carried out elsewhere.

The curator will work in association with the School's teaching team and in particular with the teachers in charge of the programme: Arnaud Deshayes, Ingrid Luche and Hervé Trioreau. He/she will be assisted by La Box's permanent team: Chloé Nicolas (coordinator) and Véronique Frémiot (registrar and cultural liaison officer).

There is no set exhibition formula. The number, duration and spacing of the exhibitions are left to the discretion of the curator: possibilities include a single, evolving exhibition, several exhibitions per month, off-site exhibitions, etc. In drawing up his/her programme the curator will need to take the School's calendar into account – vacations, exams – in the interests of student participation.
Candidates must be aware that this kind of programme demands considerable availability on their part. Attendance at regular on-site meetings – including the project validation and organisation meeting in June 2014 – is indispensable. In addition, ready responsiveness by phone or email is vital during preparation of the programme. The curator must be present during the setting up and opening of exhibitions.

In the case of a collective, dialogue and coordination between the members is essential so as to avoid all contradictions in their dealings with the School and La Box.

OPEN CALL to Nordic artists wishing to strengthen their network in the Berlin art scene.

Großes Treffen | Stormöte | Suuri kokous | Stort møte | Listastefna | Stormøde is a one day network event that offers the opportunity for Finnish, Swedish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Greenlandic, Faroese and Danish visual artists (also performers, sound artists, artists who create public artworks and interventions as well as designers and architects working within the visual arts field) to do portfolio presentations and get acquainted with key agents of Berlin’s art scene according to their specific interests.

The Nordic Embassies will host the event where 60 to 80 artists will be given the chance to meet a number of prominent Berlin-based curators representing a selection of vibrant art institutions, residency organizers, and festival curators. A jury will preselect the participating artists based on their submitted portfolios (deadline: 21 January, 2014).

The Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) Production Programme broadens the possibilities for the production of art in the MENASA region through a commitment to support innovation and excellence in artistic practice by encouraging risk and experimentation. This commitment places artists at the core of the Foundation’s mission by offering grants and professional support for the realisation of projects selected from an open call for proposals.

The past decade has seen an extraordinary rise in artistic activity throughout the Middle East, resulting in an increased visibility for artists both regionally and internationally. Within this context, the Foundation hopes to promote and encourage an environment of public and private patronage for the highest level of artistic endeavour. This programme focuses on supporting artists in their individual attempts to create work on a scale they have perhaps never imagined possible.

Arts practitioners are invited to propose imaginative, ambitious and inspirational projects that will transform our understanding of what art is and how it can be experienced. With this initiative we hope to engage and challenge the artists, our audiences and ourselves aesthetically, intellectually, emotionally, socially, politically or in ways new and unexpected.

In 2014 we are offering production grants to artists working in a range of media including sculpture, installation, time-based media, artist’s books and performance. Up to a total of $200,000 is available in this application cycle. The success of a proposal will be determined by merit rather than budget. To this end, projects with budgets that range from modest to ambitious scales will be considered. The submission deadline is 31 January 2014 and selections will be announced in March. The selected projects will be developed and produced by the artist and the Sharjah Art Foundation, with presentation of the completed project as agreed between the artist(s) and SAF.

The Production Programme was launched in 2008. Over 500 submissions have been received, 230 applications considered and 31 projects selected for production.

Grants for Media Art 2014 of the Foundation of Lower Saxony

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Application deadline: February 16, 2014 

The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art will award three Grants for Media Art 2014 of the Foundation of Lower Saxony (10,000 € each).

The grant from the Foundation of Lower Saxony at the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art supports a wide spectrum of media art, from video art and net-based projects to audio or audio-visual installations.

Each grant will be awarded for the production of a new project in the area of media art. 

 

A preliminary jury as well as a jury will convene to select the recipients of the grants.

Award criteria:

• A requirement for the prize is user registration and submission of the online application via this website by 16 February 2014, 12:00 a.m. (CET). Applications submitted after this date cannot be taken into consideration.
• The grant is valid for the duration of 6 months (July–December 2014). It cannot be prolonged and residency is compulsory. Anticipated stay in Oldenburg: at least one month.
• The project or the artistic work should be completed within the six-month duration of the grant. A possible extension of this period must be discussed in advance with the grant supervisor.
• Applications will only be accepted from artists and not from institutions.
• Only one application per person per year will be accepted.
• Artists can apply as a group; however, the grant is the same as for individual applications. The applicant whose name is provided as a contact will be considered responsible for the project. Co-applicants will also carry creative responsibility for the project. People enlisted to assist the team (programmers, sound technicians, advisers, specialists etc.) cannot be considered members of the group.
• If desired, grant recipients can apply to stay in a furnished guest apartment.
• The artist will be included in the activities of the Edith-Russ-Haus, including workshops, presentations or artist’s talks. The dates will be arranged in consultation with the Edith-Russ-Haus.
• Beyond the grant to the amount of €10,000 and the possibility of using one of the guest apartments in the Edith-Russ-Haus, no further costs will be covered (such as technical means, production means, travel expenses, living expenses during the duration of the grant, the stay, or for an evening spent by the recipients in Oldenburg).
• A jury consisting of international experts will select the recipients of the grants.
• Only the materials listed below will be taken into consideration. Originals and unique copies are excluded.
• The application may be submitted in either English or German. In German applications, some important information must also be provided in English.
• The recipients agree to allow grant the organisers all rights to the use of images of their artworks for publication, archiving, website publication as well as any further form of communication without payment as long as this use does not damage or intend to damage the participants’ reputation.
• An application is considered accepted when the applicant receives confirmation via email. If the application does not conform to the prescribed conditions, the applicant will not be sent email confirmation.
• The organisers and the jury have the unilateral right to exclude applications that do not conform to the conditions.

The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art will handle the submitted materials with great care. In view of the volume of the submitted materials, we cannot assume liability for any slight damage that may occur.

Documentation will NOT be returned. The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art does not assume liability for any losses during mailing.

The information and documentation you submit will only be used at the Edith-Russ-Haus for the purposes of processing your application. The jury’s decision will be made known online once the selection process has been completed. This is expected to take place in April 2014.

About the EDITH-RUSS-HAUS FOR MEDIA ART:

The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art opened in 2000 and is devoted to a wide range of current issues related to media art. It regularly mounts exhibitions of international artists and organises series of presentations and lectures for artists and media theorists. Important pasts exhibitions have dealt with key contemporary themes such as Something Other Than Photography: Photo&Media and Generation i.2 – The Aesthetics of the Digital in the 21st Century; important media artists, some of them recipients of an Edith-Russ-Haus award, have been presented in solo exhibitions. In 2011, the exhibition Produced@ reflected on the results of the first ten years of the grant for media art at the Edith-Russ-Haus.

The Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art has had a regular visiting artist program since 2001 that has supported and implemented 35 suggestions for artistic projects to date. There are two one-room apartments and a live-in studio available for this purpose. Recipients of the grant can fall back on the institutional support of the Edith-Russ-Haus during the realization of their projects.
