Description
The Tending Space Fellowship Program for Artists was developed with the view that art has the capacity to infuse the experience of everyday life with awareness. The aim of the program is to nurture the creative practice of seeing things as they are, to cultivate that awareness, and to live and create from this insight. Toward that purpose, we support artists with opportunities for both contemplation and creation. Qualified applicants will be artists who are rigorously committed to their art form and who have a demonstrable interest in contemplative practice.

The 2015 Tending Space fellowship program is open to visual and performing artists and writers. The application process for the 2015 program year opens on January 1 and closes on February 15, 2015. Ten fellowships will be awarded.

Program Description:

During the six month period of the program, June through November 2015, fellows will be provided with the following support, the details of which will be determined in conversation with fellowship staff:

A residential meditation retreat of up to thirty days: this can be used in one or two installments, e.g. one retreat up to a month in length, or two retreats totaling up to thirty days.

An art retreat or workshop: this could be a residential program of up to fifteen days, such as a writers conference or a contemplative arts retreat, or an on-going class or training.

A two week studio residency at Vermont Studio Center (VSC), or another setting as needed: visual artists and writers are asked to attend one of two VSC residency sessions, August 15-28 or August 30-September 12, 2015; alternatives will be arranged for performing artists whose studio needs are not compatible VSC’s facilities. Travel expenses for either option are covered.

A stipend of $2,500, to be used for expenses related to fellowship activities, including travel to and from residential programs, materials, and income support. Increased support is available for international fellows.

An art mentor and a meditation mentor: after a discussion with each fellow about their needs, experience, and inspiration in regard to possible mentors, Hemera staff facilitates the process of connecting fellows with appropriate mentors. Mentors may be drawn from within the Tending Space fellowship community, which already includes many accomplished artists and meditation teachers; we are also happy to reach out to new possible mentors. Fellows and mentors determine together a schedule and mode of communication that works best for both over the course of the fellowship, either electronically or in person.

The Tending Space online application is hosted by the Vermont Studio Center, whom we are proud to have as a partner. Founded by artists in 1984, VSC is the largest international artists’ and writers’ residency program in the United States, hosting fifty visual artists and writers each month from across the country and around the world.
