Job, Portland State University (OR): Assistant Professor of Graphic Design with an emphasis in Experiential / Socially-Minded Design, Tenure-Track

The College of the Arts (COTA) and the School of Art + Design at Portland State University invite applications for an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, commencing Fall 2016. This is a tenure track, 1.0 FTE, 9-month position.
  • Responsibilities would include: Teaching responsibilities to include courses in graphic design at the upper and lower division levels, to be determined in consultation with the Director of the School of Art + Design.
  • • Development of a scholarly agenda consistent with School and University criteria, and incorporating areas of research, teaching, and service.
  • • Development of curriculum and programs.
  • • University and departmental service.
  • • Student advising and community service/outreach.
  • Minimum Qualifications: MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Graphic Design or closely related field.
  • Research and experience and/or strong professional accomplishments in socially-engaged design, user experience and interactive design with a desire to teach and develop curriculum around these topics.
  • A mastery in typography, conceptual problem solving and graphic design theory, history and practice.
  • Successful candidates will support graphic design practice that is socially engaged, that promotes human-centered / participatory design, with collaborative and multidisciplinary approaches, one that engages with diverse audiences across the commercial and creative sectors and exists off the page.
  • Ability to utilize collaborative, team learning at every level of the curriculum.
