The Oslo Architecture Triennale 2016: After Belonging invites architects and other professionals from around the world to engage in a debate concerning our changing condition of belonging and the contemporary transformation of residence. This open, international call offers a unique opportunity to be part of the Triennale's core program, as it seeks intervention strategies for five different sites in the Nordic region. One intervention strategy will be selected for each site and will be developed over one year. The selected interventions will be displayed at the National Museum—Architecture in Oslo.

International call for associated projects
Deadline:

Information regarding the two calls can be found at www.oslotriennale.com.

After Belonging
A Triennale In Residence, On Residence and the Ways We Stay in Transit

With a stranger sleeping on your couch; inside the boxes at the storage facility; surrounded by the information you share in the cloud; after clearing customs at the airport; where your passport allows you to reside. "Being at home" entails different definitions nowadays, both within domestic settings and in the spaces defined by national boundaries under contemporary regimes of circulation.

The 2016 Oslo Architecture Triennale designs the objects, spaces, and territories for a transforming condition of belonging. Global circulation of people, information, and goods has destabilized what we understand by residence, questioning spatial permanence, property, and identity—a crisis of belonging. Circulation brings greater accessibility to ever-new commodities and further geographies. But, simultaneously, circulation also promotes growing inequalities for large groups, kept in precarious states of transit. After Belonging examines both our attachment to places and collectivities—Where do we belong?—as well as our relation to the objects we own, share, and exchange—How do we manage our belongings?

The Oslo Architecture Triennale 2016 is divided into two parts:
-A triennale On Residence, in which to collectively analyze the spatial conditions that shape our ways of staying in transit and the definition of our contemporary spaces of residence
-A triennale In Residence, in which international architects and professionals concerned with the built environment will engage in local collaborations in Oslo, the Nordic region, and around the globe, to intervene in the transformation of residence

How can different agents involved in the built environment address the ways we stay in transit? How can architects intervene in the reconfiguration of the contemporary residence?

With commissioned reports to: James Bridle, Matilde Cassani, Eriksen Skajaa Architects, Emily Fahlèn + Ahmet Ögüt, Husos, Living Architectures (Ila Bêka, Louise Lemoine), Jill Magid, Emeka Ogboh, The State (Rahel Aima, Ahmad Makia, Deepak Unnikrishnan), Transborder Studio + Friday Milk

Artist Residency Opportunity SUSTAINABLE ARTS FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP FOR ARTISTS WHO ARE PARENTS

Gallery Aferro believes that persistent dedication to craft and creative output is a formula for success as an artist, but sometimes life gets in the way of artistic productivity. This issue is particularly visible in the case of artists who are also parents. Many of our responsibilities and experiences define our time and creative output. Gallery Aferro is invested in uplifting artists to help them make art now, not later, and encouraging an environment where they can make work as large and complex as the vision of the artist. With the help of funding from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, Gallery Aferro offers this open call to all artists that are parents* and would like to continue their creative practice in an engaged and energized studio residency in downtown Newark, NJ. The studio will be provided to the parent for 6 months at no cost and will come with a $1000 stipend given at the beginning of the 6-month rotation. The stipend and free studio will facilitate the parent-artist in coordinating effective time and energy to be spent in their studios.
*The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a “Parent” simply as “a person who is a father or mother” -or- “a person who has a child”, and although that may be a nice, tidy definition, we think it oversimplifies the term. A “Parent” we think can be defined in many ways that are definitely not tied to gender binaries or “having” a child. This open call is open to anyone who has or shares legal guardianship over a person under the age of 18.
This open call opportunity is for 2 slots, February 20th, 2016 - August 19th, 2016 & August 20th, 2016 - February 19th, 2017. The studio is a newly renovated work-only space with large steel shelving. It is a private studio but the building is regularly busy with artists and art enthusiasts interested in collaboration and idea sharing. This call is open to artists, local or not, who are working in any media.

Border Art Residency, New Mexico: seeking applicants

The Border Art Residency was established in 1997 as a place to support contemporary visual artists. BAR, a non-profit organization affiliated with the El Paso Community Foundation, offers a selected artist a period of retreat for creative work. The Residency sits on an orchard and sculpture garden in La Union, New Mexico, located 15 miles from El Paso, Texas, in the scenic Mesilla Valley. A former cotton gin re-worked to provide a spacious living and studio space, resident artists are provided with a fully furnished living/working space, all utilities (except phone), and a monthly stipend of $600.
BAR enables artists to pursue their craft without the worry of immediate sales or an outside job to pay for housing expenses. Artists selected for the program are able to achieve a greater degree of personal growth by concentrating on individual goals. They also share progress with local students, educators and the public.
The BAR differs from many artist residency programs since it is designed for a single artist (or couple) in a remote and unique locale near the US/Mexico border. It is best suited to a self-sufficient individual who seeks a period of quiet and solitude for serious artistic inquiry and production.
Selection is made by a panel of nationally recognized artists and arts professionals. Application package and fee must be submitted by January 15, 2016. For more information about the residency or to apply please visit our website http://borderartresidency.com/index.php?id=apply&nav=apply

Call for applications: Diane Dammeyer Fellowship in Photographic Arts and Social Issues

The Diane Dammeyer Fellowship in Photographic Arts and Social Issues is a unique collaboration between the Photography Department at Columbia College Chicago and Heartland Alliance, a leading global anti-poverty organization.
The purpose of this postgraduate fellowship is to create an opportunity for a socially engaged photographer to immerse himself/herself in the community of participants served by Heartland Alliance programs and to produce a new, original, and compelling body of photographic work that speaks to the human rights and social issues revealed through these experiences.
By engaging with the Heartland Alliance community of participants and practitioners—and not merely observing or documenting the people or programs from afar—the fellowship allows the artist to create a true connection between subject, audience, and community. This serves the larger goal of the fellowship, which is to use photographic practice to elevate our collective awareness of social, economic, and cultural issues, and to inspire positive social change.
A 25,000 USD stipend will be awarded for the 2016–17 academic year to support the fellow’s work.  Talented individuals who have completed an MFA in photography or in another related creative field and who are committed to active immersion and participation with Heartland Alliance and Columbia College Chicago are encouraged to apply.
In addition to his/her work with the Heartland Alliance community in the greater Chicago area, the fellow will also spend significant time at Columbia College Chicago, where he/she will be mentored by a Department of Photography faculty member and will work with Columbia students. The fellow will also have a Heartland Alliance project sponsor dedicated to aid his/her immersion in the Heartland community and to provide valuable feedback during the nine-month project. The fellowship will culminate with a public presentation, exhibition, and/or publication of the fellow’s newly created body of work at the completion of the fellowship period.
The Diane Dammeyer Fellowship is administered under the auspices of both Columbia College Chicago and Heartland Alliance, two internationally recognized institutions with deep roots in Chicago dating back more than 120 years. As a pioneer in arts and media education, Columbia combines its internationally recognized experience teaching creative students to develop authentic voices and meaningful skills in partnership with Heartland Alliance’s history of advocating for the rights of the world’s most vulnerable populations. The fellowship is supported by Columbia alumna Diane Dammeyer, whose experience as a photographer for Heartland Alliance inspired her to create both an undergraduate scholarship and a postgraduate fellowship in the hope that emerging artists would conceive of creative ways to use their skills to help the nonprofit organization better realize its goals.
